How to Tie Ice Fishing Line to Reel

Topic: Proper way to spool an ice rod  (Read 3086 times)

I'm not certain if it would exist any different than a normal casting rod, but I've had some problems with spinning jigs so I'1000 assuming I did it wrong.

Is it best to put a pencil in the spool and so reel it onto to reel or or is all-time to set it downwards and put it on as it comes off of the reel. (Like in this vid http://www.youtube.com/lookout man?five=kwGSTZ-c4Rc)

im thinking your jigs are spinning because they are spun when y'all jig them. the when they sit down all the same they unspin.

normaly when i respool a spinning reel, i will tie a swivel to the end of the line, tie the swivel to a tree and pull all the line off the reel and stretch information technology out across the yard. when its all off the spool i pull on the line to try and put tention on it, that usually pulls the twist out of the line considering the swivel volition spin. then you can respool, as you lot reel the hinge should spin, keeping the twist in the angling line to a minimal.

Spinning reel, put the spool of line flat on the floor. Baitcaster/conventional, pencil through the spool... Basically yous want the natural coiling of the line coming off of the spool to current of air the same fashion onto yer reel...or something.
Probably simply confused the heck out of y'all.

He's right ... a spining reel should be spooled with the spool flat, merely go on watching equally you lot may demand to flip it over if the natural coil starts working against you the other style.

baitcaster should be spooled straight off the spool using a pencil being held by a friend with slight pressure (or spool tensioner like I apply). Think of an old school reel-to-reel tape deck ... that's basically the thought.

Keep in heed some lures tend to spin on the driblet, so fifty-fifty if you put the line on correct, you may still experience some spinnage. Hope that helps.

A good swivel 18" above your jig will help a lot with your spinning trouble.

Thanks guys. Pretty certain i had the line roll off of the spool and that was my effect.

If you have already filled the reel yous can ever pull off a good bit of the line (as deep every bit you intend to fish), then close the spool and while holding the line coming onto the spool between your thumb and forefinger lightly (put some tension on information technology) merely wind the line back onto the spool. Just exist sure to accept plenty of room for the amount of line you pull off to spread out...this will help minimize twist every bit y'all are reeling it back in.

One matter I also liked to do is that while I had some line pulled off the spool I'd tie the tag stop to something and with the spool closed and while holding the line between your fingers, requite the line a nice directly and steady pull to stretch it a flake. You don't want to break it, just if you have line that has a good flake of retention to information technology, this will help become some of the twisting out of information technology earlier winding information technology back on the spool.

Another practiced tip. Thanks. I'll requite that a attempt earlier trashing the whole spool.

If you have already filled the reel you tin can always pull off a good bit of the line (as deep as you lot intend to fish), so shut the spool and while holding the line coming onto the spool between your thumb and forefinger lightly (put some tension on it) just wind the line back onto the spool. Just exist sure to have plenty of room for the amount of line you pull off to spread out...this will assist minimize twist equally y'all are reeling information technology back in.

1 matter I also liked to do is that while I had some line pulled off the spool I'd necktie the tag end to something and with the spool airtight and while holding the line between your fingers, give the line a dainty straight and steady pull to stretch it a bit. You lot don't want to pause it, merely if you lot have line that has a good bit of memory to it, this will aid become some of the twisting out of information technology before winding information technology back on the spool.

I DO THE Aforementioned....AND SOMETIMES Ill PUT A SLIP BOBBER KNOT ON THE LINE AND LEAVE THE Niggling Blackness TUBE ON AND WHEN I UNSPOOL THE Corporeality OF LINE I Desire I Attach THE KNOT AND TIGHTEN AND SLIDE THE KNOT TO THE Cease OF THE LINE....THAT HOLDS OFF THE SPINNING JIG GODS OFF FOR A WHILE

lay the spool flat. turn crank a dozen or so times and grab the line just ahead of the spooa and bring in toward the spool. if you lot get line twist, flip the spool over and go along to reel. this should resolve the line twist when spooling your reel. any line twist while line-fishing would exist the effect of the last tackle or trying to reeling against the drag

I like the line to curl off my spools if possible.

I similar the line to roll off my spools if possible.

Isn't that something that tin crusade line twist?

Isn't that something that tin crusade line twist?

Might be, only the better reels that I use don't show information technology and really I'll never take to go untangle the line wrapping around my rod tip...ice rod or regular full length rod.  I remember information technology likewise depends on the how the lines are packaged or rolled onto the spools.  Better machines nowadays and softer, more limp, more supple lines.  Too the filler spool bore doesn't match the reel spool diameter so information technology's kind of doesn't work out sometimes.  Some filler spools have notches or some plastic mold ding in them that catches the line.  See the packages with the window on the side of the carton, perfect for line spooling.

seems that fish tin can also have untwisted line and twist it upwardly pretty good particularly bulegills a friend i was fishing with had to reline his reel after a trip because the gills were swimmin circles and he line was soo twisted up he but scrapped it and replaced it. I use a swivel about 18 twenty inches up help out bigggg time.

OK I'll requite this i upwards for the team: If you put new line on your reel and some how it still wants to bound of your reel, even though yous have done everything the pros are tell ya! Take the spool of the reel and stick information technology in hot water and let it absurd. You have just set information technology's memory to your reel! If your jig is however spinning, you will have to effort a small swivel. There are likewise many things that volition cause line spin and one is reeling up a fish while its taking out line. And so damned if you do and damned if ya don't. You tin can also endeavour property the jig, and stretching the line, sometimes this will take the twist out and works quite well if you lot are fishing shallow water. :icefish:

The spinning jig was never a problem before people started using cameras. The fish really don't care. At least the ones I caught on a spinning jig while using my camera. If annihilation I call up it helps. You lot will get line twist when the allurement falls and when you lot bring it back up. It's always been a function of vertical jigging.

Someone (I think on here) posted this little trick a couple of years ago.  I was skeptical, but gave it a try on my summer reels and it worked smashing.  Works proficient on the smaller ice fishing spinning reels as well.

Prior to spooling up, get a saucepan of hot h2o and driblet the spool of line in information technology.  Permit it sit five or ten minutes, then spool up your reel.  Showtime with the characterization on the spool face downwards, and pinch the line with your fingers while reeling.  After 10-twenty cranks, drop the rod tip and look for twisting.  If it is twisting, turn the spool over and do another 10-xx cranks, drop the rod tip and cheque for twisting.  I'm going to spool up a new Shimano Sienna 500FD this evening.  Going to try to rig something to continue the spool faced correctly and on the lesser of the bucket of water.

Try it.  I was skeptical, only pleasantly surprised with the results.
